The Principality of Asturias is comprised of a single province and the capital is Oviedo . The Costa Verde or Green Coast is one of the popular attractions of northern Spain. Asturias is surrounded by the mountains of Cordillera Cantabrica, a natural border between the Bay of Biscay to the north, and the region of Castilla y Leon to the south.

The Costa Verde begins in the west of Asturias, with picturesque towns of unique charm such as Castropol and the traditional fishing port Luarca. The town of Avilés provides travellers with a pedestrian urban centre looked down on by the old church of Sabugo. Slightly inland is the city of Gijón, with its ancient quarter made up of the Santa Catalina hill and the eighbourhood known as Cimadevilla. The eastern coast of Asturias is an invitation to visit its long beaches through historic localities such as Ribadesella and Llanes and fishing villages such as Lastres or Tazones.
