Barcelona unbeaten in 16 games.

Barcelona extended their unbeaten run in the league this season to 16 games after beating neighbours Espanyol. The visitors came in to the match on the back of four defeats in a row, but they put up a battling performance, and only lost thanks to a controversial penalty which Ibrahimovic converted after Xavi fell in the area following a pull on his shirt. After the break the best chances fell to Espanyol, but they were unable to beat a confident Víctor Valdés.

Real Madrid stay five points behind the leaders with a game in hand after a narrow victory over third placed Valencia. All the goals came after the break, Higuaín heading the visitors in to the lead from Benzemas cross before Villa got on the end of Matieus centre to equalise. Higuaín restored the lead after Marcelo set him up, and although Joaquín levelled the scores once again, substitute Garay headed Xabi Alonsos long free kick past César for the winner.

Barcelona stay 5 points clear at the top

Ballon DOr winner Lionel Messi scored a brace as Barcelona won at Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday to restore their five point advantage over Real Madrid at the summit.

Four days after collecting the award for European Player of the Year Messi turned on the style scoring a brilliant opener and then heading a crucial 80th minute goal after Depor had equalised.

It took Messis goals tally to nine alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic who scored Barcas third goal in the closing stages.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero and villain for Real Madrid playing a pivotal role in their comeback win over Almeria at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, only to be sent off late on for violent conduct.

"I am human and make mistakes too," said Ronaldo. "It was an instinctive reaction and I have apologised to my team-mates."

Barcelona Back On Top

Barcelonas £60m striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic stepped off the bench to score the only goal of a fiercely contested El Clasico against Real Madrid and move Barca back to the top of the league.

Barca, who started the game a point behind their arch rivals, finished the game with 10 men when Sergio Busquets was shown a second yellow card just after the hour mark.

But by that time they had a lead courtesy of Ibrahimovics brilliantly struck leftfoot volley from Dani Alves rightwing cross. The Swede netting just minutes after coming on for Thierry Henry.

Real created the better of the chances in the Camp Nou, but paid for their wastefulness, with substitute Karim Benzema most culpable as he ballooned haplessly over with only five minutes left.

Real Madrid Take Top Spot

Real Madrid claimed top spot in La Liga this evening, following their win over Racing Santander and Barcelonas draw at Athletic Bilbao. Los Merengues had gone top thanks to a steady, if unspectacular win, secured by Gonzalo Higuains first half goal, but had to wait for the outcome of Barça trip to San Mames in the late kick off to find out if they would stay there.

The Spanish and European champions looked on course to reclaim their place at the summit when Dani Alves opened the scoring in the 54th minute. Xavi squeezed an angled pass through to the Brazilian, who produced a calm right footed finish across Athletic keeper Gorka Iraizoz and into the bottom-right corner.

However, the hosts levelled nine minutes later when Fernando Llorente beat Dimitro Chygrynskiy in the air and flicked on for substitute Gaizka Toquero, who despatched a clinical right footed shot into Victor Valdess top right corner. Barça pressed but they could not find a winning goal, and will head into next weekends El Clasico a point behind their fierce rivals.

Fisher Wins World Match Play

Ross Fisher beat the American Anthony Kim 4&3 in the final of the World Match Play Championship at the Finca Cortesin golf course in Andalucia, Spain.

Fisher, who is €750,000 (£671,000) richer after negotiating 126 hilly holes at the mountainous Finca Cortesin layout over four gruelling days, moves into fourth place on the European Tours Race to Dubai and has already gone a long way towards assuring himself of a Ryder Cup debut at Celtic Manor next October.

"This is a massive confidence boost for me," said the new champion. "I felt like I played well and did a good job of putting the pressure on him," added Fisher. "I was relieved to get to three up though. At that point I knew I just had to finish the job off.

"I could have won every major this year if things had gone my way – I led all four at some point – so Ive been very consistent without winning. But this is a big step up for me. Anything with the word world in the title has to mean a great deal."

Barcelona Top La Liga Despite Draw

Leaders Barcelona dropped two vital points in the last minute after a draw against a battling Osasuna. Keita connected with a cross from Puyol to give Guardiolas side the lead with twenty minutes to go, and Ricardo had to be at his best to keep out Ibrahimovic and Messi after that. But with the game in the last minute of injury time Camuñas squeezed past an indecisive Márquez to lay the ball across goal, and Piqué and Valdés could only deflect it in to their own net.

Earlier in the evening Real Madrid recovered from their recent bad form to beat neighbours Getafe. Things appeared to be going against them when Raúl Albiol was sent off for pulling back Soldado with just under half an hour on the clock. But Higuaín saved the day for his side with two goals in three minutes soon after the restart, the first after controlling a cross from Marcelo and the second after an assist from Benzema. Pellegrinis side are now only a point behind Barça in the table.
